South African Braai Smash Sandwich

South Africa's beloved braai culture in sandwich form — a smash burger made with boerewors-spiced beef patty (the South African sausage spice: coriander, cloves, nutmeg, allspice), smashed on a griddle until crispy-edged, layered with chakalaka (spiced bean relish), slap chips (thick South African chips) and cheese on thick-cut bread.

Method

  1. Mix boerewors spices into the ground beef gently. Divide into 4 balls.

    About 5 min

  2. Cook slap chips: fry potatoes at 160°C for 8–10 minutes (low temp makes them soft inside, which is the authentic South African style). Drain and season.

    About 14 min

  3. Heat a heavy griddle or cast-iron pan until smoking. Smash beef balls flat. Season. Cook 2 minutes; flip; add cheese; cook 1 more minute.

    About 14 min

  4. Butter and toast the bread slices.

    About 14 min

  5. Build: toast → chakalaka → smash patty with cheese → slap chips → tomato → toast top. The combination of the spiced boerewors flavour with tangy chakalaka and soft chips is uniquely South African.
