Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Canadian tax calculator

How accurate is this Canadian tax calculator for 2026?

Our tax calculator uses 2026 federal and provincial brackets, CPP, EI and credit amounts for all 13 Canadian provinces and territories. It includes federal tax (14-33%), provincial tax (varies by province), CPP/CPP2 contributions ($4,646.45 max), EI premiums ($1,123.07 max), and QPIP for Quebec residents. Results are an estimate: provincial credits are approximated, and the Ontario surtax and health premium are not yet included, so check your return against CRA's own calculator before filing.

  • Privacy protected - no account required, no personal data collected

Calculations use 2026 rates and are an estimate, not tax advice.

Can I calculate taxes for Quebec with this calculator?

Yes, with limits. The calculator applies Quebec's provincial brackets (14%, 19%, 24%, 25.75%), QPIP (0.430% employee rate) and Quebec's lower EI rate (1.30% vs 1.63% elsewhere). It does not yet apply the 16.5% federal Quebec abatement or QPP's higher rate, so treat Quebec results as an estimate. All Quebec-specific calculations are automatically applied when you select QC as your province. Includes Quebec Abatement, provincial credits, and QPP contributions.

How do I optimize my RRSP contributions to save on taxes?

Use our built-in Tax Strategy Optimizer (click "Run Optimizer" button after calculating). It analyzes your income, tax brackets, and contribution room to recommend optimal RRSP amounts. The optimizer can identify opportunities to drop tax brackets, maximize deductions, and save $1,000-$5,000+ annually. For 2026, RRSP limit is 18% of prior year income up to $33,810. The calculator also tracks your remaining contribution room and shows potential savings in real-time.

What is FHSA and how does this calculator help?

FHSA (First Home Savings Account) is a registered account for first-time home buyers introduced in 2023. You can contribute $8,000 annually (plus $8,000 carryforward = $16,000 max first year). Our calculator tracks your FHSA room, shows tax savings from contributions, and the optimizer recommends optimal FHSA vs RRSP allocation. FHSA offers triple benefits: (1) tax deduction on contribution, (2) tax-free growth, (3) tax-free withdrawal for home purchase. Lifetime limit: $40,000.

Can I calculate my tax refund or amount owing?

Yes! Switch to "Tax Assessment" mode to calculate refund/owing. Enter your year-to-date income, federal tax paid, provincial tax paid, CPP paid, and EI paid. The calculator determines if you will receive a refund or owe money based on estimated year-end income and deductions. Perfect for mid-year tax planning or preparing for tax season. Shows exact refund amount or payment due with breakdown.

Which provinces are supported by this tax calculator?

All 13 Canadian provinces and territories: Ontario (ON), British Columbia (BC), Alberta (AB), Quebec (QC), Manitoba (MB), Saskatchewan (SK), Nova Scotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Prince Edward Island (PE), Northwest Territories (NT), Nunavut (NU), and Yukon (YT). Each has accurate 2026 provincial tax rates and brackets. Provincial tax credits calculated at ~50% of federal rates. No province is excluded - full Canadian coverage.

What tax credits are included in the calculations?

The calculator includes 11 federal tax credits:

  • Basic Personal Amount: $16,452 (reduced above $181,440 of income)
  • Canada Employment Amount: $1,433 (for employees)
  • CPP/EI Credits: 14% of contributions paid
  • Age Amount: $9,208 for 65+ (income tested)
  • Pension Income Amount: credit on the first $2,000
  • Disability Tax Credit: $10,341 federal base
  • Spouse/Common-Law Amount: Up to $16,452
  • Eligible Dependent Amount: $16,452 per dependent
  • Canada Caregiver Amount: $7,999 for caregivers
  • Medical Expense Credit: 14% above 3% of income (or $2,890)
  • Charitable Donation Credit: 14% first $200, 29% over

Provincial credits calculated at ~50% of federal rates (varies by province).

How does the multi-year tax planning feature work?

The multi-year planner projects your taxes 1-10 years ahead (default 5 years) with adjustable assumptions:

  • Income growth rate: Default 3% annually (you can adjust)
  • Inflation rate: Default 2% annually (adjustable)
  • RRSP contributions: Maintains % of income ratio

Shows year-by-year breakdown of income, RRSP contributions, tax owing, net income, and cumulative tax saved. Includes visual line charts and CSV export. Perfect for retirement planning, career changes, or long-term financial strategy. A comprehensive planning tool to help you make informed financial decisions years in advance.
